FAQ

Why are satellite phones illegal?

Although satellite phones are great for staying connected while travelling there are a number of countries where having a satellite phone may require special permits, or are out and out Illegal. This is because a satellite phone’s signal bypasses local telecommunication systems which can hinder wiretapping and censorship. Some countries believe satellite phones are a threat because they aid terrorist activity. Restrictions are also common in oppressive regimes as a way to control information and subvert disruptive agents inside their country’s boarders. Here are a few examples:

Cuba

Many electronics are forbidden in Cuba, including satellite phones. You cannot bring or ship a satellite phone into Cuba unless you have a permit from the Cuban Ministry of Informatics and Communications. Cuba restricts the use of satellite phones because their government believes they’re tools for subversive purposes; being caught with one can lead to arrest, time in prison, or an espionage charge.
