FAQ

Can cell phones work without satellites?

Yes they can. Most cell phones relay data via cell towers based right here on earth. Cell phones can connect to satellite systems to access GPS but calls and text go through cell towers.

When working remotely you can always opt for a standard satellite phone to stay connected. A satellite phone connects to low or high earth orbit satellites. That way, there is no need for cell towers, and you don’t have to worry about the curvature of the earth blocking your signal. (The curvature of the Earth makes it impossible to transmit data from a distance of more than 30 km at a time.) You can easily use a satellite phone to send text messages and data to other people around the world.
