FAQ

Can cell phones work without satellite?

The short answer is yes they can. Most cell phones relay data via cell towers based right here on earth. However, there are a few cell phones that can connect to satellite systems.  These cell phones can now connect to satellites from anywhere in the world and still get high-bandwidth service. While the technology isn't perfect, it is far from obsolete, and it will make a huge difference to a person in remote areas.

When working remotely you can always opt for a standard satellite phone to stay connected. A satellite phone connects to low or high earth orbit satellites. That way, there is no need for cell towers, and you don’t have to worry about the curvature of the earth blocking your signal. (The curvature of the Earth makes it impossible to transmit data from a distance of more than 30 km at a time.) You can easily use a satellite phone to send text messages and other data to other people around the world.
